Plain language, no fine print. This is what you're agreeing to, and what we're agreeing to.
Community Supported Agriculture is a relationship between a farm and the people who eat its food. It's a step beyond buying vegetables. When you join the Pungo Farm CSA, you're paying in advance for your share of the harvest — and you're taking on a part of the risk that comes with planting, growing, and tending crops.
Farming is unpredictable. We can't guarantee there won't be variation in the quality and quantity of what we're able to harvest, because a lot of it depends on circumstances outside our control. Weather, pests, and timing all get a vote.
In return for your support, we grow the best vegetables we can for you, and we tell you the truth about how it's going. Members aren't customers — you're the reason this farm exists, and you're welcome out here anytime.
We run two seasons. The Winter Season is 20 weeks, from November 25 through April 7. The Summer Season runs from April through November, with a four-week break in August while summer crops finish and fall crops go in the ground. You aren't charged for the break weeks.
Start dates are targets, not guarantees. If the weather pushes the first harvest back a week, we'll tell you as soon as we know and the season shifts with it.
A share is $38 per week. For the Winter Season, that's $725 paid in full or $152 per month for five months. Paying in full helps the farm most, because that's when our expenses are highest and our income is lowest.
Each week's box contains 7 items — enough for two adults who cook regularly, or a family that eats vegetables with most dinners. Over a season you'll see 25 or more different crops. We build each box for variety, not volume: sometimes it's lighter and more valuable, sometimes heavier and simpler.
We don't currently offer box customization. Everyone gets the same share each week. If there's something you truly can't eat, tell us and we'll do what we can, but we can't promise substitutions.
When you sign up, you're agreeing to pay for your share and to submit payments on time. If a payment fails or is missed, we'll contact you to sort it out, and we'll pause deliveries until it's resolved. We'd always rather have a conversation than a surprise.
Boxes are ready on Wednesdays. You're responsible for picking up your share each week, or arranging for someone else to collect it. If you send someone, make sure they know the location, the pickup window, and to take only the box with your name on it.
You choose one pickup location when you sign up: Pungo Farm (Back Bay), the Oceanfront, Simply Sourced Health Nut, or Chesapeake (Greenbrier area).
If you can't pick up in a given week, let us know by the Sunday before and we'll place a hold on your box. If you miss a pickup without arranging a hold beforehand, that box is forfeited — our host sites are generous people offering space as a courtesy, and we can't ask them to hold food overnight or field late arrivals. Unclaimed boxes are donated or shared at the end of the pickup window.
Running a few minutes late is fine. Just let us know.
Going out of town? Log into your account or email us by the Sunday before your pickup and we'll hold that week's box. Any balance from held weeks does not carry over from one season to the next.
A CSA share is a season commitment — your payment is spent on seed, plastic, compost, and labor long before the food reaches you, which is the whole reason the model works for a small farm.
That said, if you need to cancel, email us at hello@pungofarm.com. We'll issue a refund on a pro-rated basis for boxes not yet delivered. The same applies if you're dissatisfied for any reason — we'd rather refund you and part on good terms than keep money from someone who isn't happy.
We grow beyond organic. We are not USDA certified — for a farm our size, selling directly to the people who eat the food, the paperwork and fees don't make sense. What we do: no synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, no GMOs, compost and cover crops to build soil, insect netting and crop rotation instead of chemical controls. If a crop would otherwise be lost, we use only OMRI-approved materials, the same ones certified organic growers are permitted. Most weeks we spray nothing at all.

This is the part that makes a CSA different from a grocery order, so we want it stated plainly.
We irrigate in drought, cover crops against insects, grow under tunnels through the winter, and plant a wide range of crops and varieties specifically so a failure in one doesn't empty your box. Diversity is our insurance policy and we take it seriously.
But a hard freeze, a hurricane, a week of rain at the wrong moment, or an insect year we didn't anticipate can still take a crop out. When that happens, your box may be lighter than we hoped, or missing something we said was coming. Whatever the farm produces, members get first claim on it. And a bad year costs us considerably more than it costs you.
By signing up for a share, you're agreeing to share in the risks and the rewards of a small, local, chemical-free farm. That's what makes it community supported.
We collect only what we need to run your membership — name, contact details, pickup location, and payment records. We will never sell your information to anyone. Payments are processed through secure, encrypted third-party services; we don't store your card details ourselves.
